To operate a child only four months old with congenital cataracts is a challenge for any eye surgeon. The Eye Clinic at the University Hospital Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum is one of the first to carry out this difficult operation with a femtosecond laser. A pioneering intervention with this high-precision technology has Prof. Dr. med. Burkhard Dick, Director of the Eye Clinic in Bochum, and Assistant Doctor. Tim Schultz captured in a video. For this cinematic documentation, the two Bochum physicians were honored at this year's Congress of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) in Berlin with a video prize worth 1000 euros.

The jury praised the professional processing of the video and the novelty of the topic. The film shows how the femtosecond laser can be used to treat cataract surgery safely and with good prospects for unrestricted vision, even in the case of young children. Dick and Schultz show in their documentation in detail the advantages and limitations of the new technology. In infants, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia; in adults, cataract surgery is usually performed after instillation of narcotic eye drops or some other form of local anesthetic.
